Cranbury Park

Hiking through the woods surrounding the expansive field of Cranbury Park. The trail meanders close to the edge of the trees, where we can peek out of the shade onto the sun-splashed field. We hear the distant voices of children and adults playing in the open and can choose to either emerge into the sunlight and join the din or retreat back onto the trail, into the shadows and into our meandering thoughts.

Guardrail

Driving through the New Mexico landscape, marveling at the vistas and the changes in vegetation and climate within short driving distances. In some places noticed very little evidence of human presence, and found it comforting. Ignoring the irony that we were enjoying the experience from our rental car, driving on a paved road.

Eel Pond

On a sweaty, hot August afternoon, free to wander for a change, we happened upon a small pond among the rolling green hills of northern Connecticut. The water was barely visible through the abundant growth teeming with activity. Dragon flies, crickets, frogs, they all made themselves heard, while a faint “plop” on the water surface reminded us of the presence of fish beneath that cacophony. The sun, indifferent to all this, shed its blazing, hot rays to make playful reflections of sky through the patches of water.

Farm Memories

The farm house was white stucco with a terra cotta roof. The working and storage spaces were on the ground floor, with its large doors to accommodate the various tools and machinery. The hay loft was inside the largest opening, and it was here that we would search for eggs when a hen made a racket to alert us. My cousins and I would scamper over the surrounding gardens, orchards and fields, staying clear of the adults and daring each other to climb the overloaded fruit trees.

Looking for a Hammock

Sitting in the shade at the edge of a park while people walk their dogs on a nearby trail. A breeze rustling the foliage, sunlight peeking through the canopy and creating lacy designs on the grass. Total relaxation, and an awareness of being in the moment. Also a feeling of harmony, like floating off the ground while being held tight by the hug of a hammock. Nice.
